Launched in spring 2006 in a blaze of publicity, Freedom of the Seas is the world’s biggest cruise ship, capable of carrying a staggering 3,600 passengers. There’s so much to do that the ship really is a destination in its own right. As well as the rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink that feature on other Royal Caribbean ships, there is also an interactive family water park.Even though it is so big, it is well designed, very easy to get around and with lots of light, so passengers don’t feel hemmed in. With all the facilities and innovations onboard it offers excellent value for money.Service is friendly rather than sophisticated.
An excellent choice for couples, first-timers and experienced cruisers, as there is so much to do on board. Good value for money. All Royal Caribbean ships have fabulous facilities for families, but Freedom’s sheer size means there is even more on offer for kids, including an interactive water park. On this ship, Royal Caribbean has also expanded its range of family suites. An excellent option for sports enthusiasts, as it has a world-class gym, a wide range of sports facilities and even its own training club, Boot Camp Xtreme Training. This huge ship will not suit some people who prefer to travel on smaller vessels. Having said that, there is so much to do that Freedom has quickly gained lots of fans, both experienced cruisers and those new to cruising.
Don’t miss the Circus of the Seas parade, where jugglers, clowns and street artists perform. One of the promenade Staterooms has a partially-obstructed view. Called the Ben and Jerry’s Suite and seeing that it is obstructed, you will be offered free Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream throughout the duration of your cruise. This is the best option at sea for the keep-fit fanatic who has never fancied a cruise before for fear of not being able to work out fully. Fully equipped Gym including a boxing ring, free weights and every kind of sporting equipment needed to work out. Spin classes, Aerobics sessions and Pilates are also available.Children have there own water park, H2Ozone and swimming area separate from the Adults only Solarium. On-line check in is now available, meaning you can save time queuing at the embarkation point.
With 15 decks of activity, the only problem will be how to fit everything in during your week on board. There are 16 bars. One of them, Viking Crown Lounge, transforms into a jazz club at night. The huge casino wouldn’t look out of place in Las Vegas. The ship has a Day Spa and Fitness centre operated by Elemis, which includes an adult whirlpools that juts out over the ocean, an ice-skating rink, rock-climbing wall, Full size Basketball sports court, water park H2Ozone, and full-size boxing ring. A feature of Freedom of the Seas, like her sister ships, is the imaginative use of the Royal Promenade area, which has a coffee shop, Duty Free shop; pizzeria outlet; bistro; wine bar, champagne bar, sports Bar, Pub; barbershop, Jewellery shop and a sports shop.
Every cabin has its own flat-screen TV, minimum size 23-inch. There are six different family cabin options, the biggest of which are the Royal Family suites, which hold eight people. If required, they can connect to a neighbouring cabin to increase occupancy to 10. There are also eight six-person Family Ocean view rooms, four six person Promenade Family rooms, and two six-person Inside Family rooms. The biggest cabin is the 14-person Presidential Suite, with dual entryways and two master bedrooms, each with their own 30-inch flat-screen TV. Promenade-view cabins are very popular, and sell at a premium, as these overlook the main thoroughfare, with its street parades and entertainers.
Freedom of the Seas huge theatre can hold 1,350 people for glitzy Las Vegas-style shows, while the ice rink doubles as a 760-seater show venue with impressive performances from professional skaters. The Crypt disco is on two floors; the ship’s climbing wall has 11 different routes, so that everyone from beginner to expert can have a go; while the H20 Zone interactive family water park is popular among passengers.
The main restaurant is on three floors, but there are plenty of options, including informal pizzeria and Johnny Rockets a 50’s themed diner, smaller, more intimate, dining venues and an extensive room-service range.
