Celebrity Solstice is the cruiseline’s first new ship for six years so the company put a lot of time and effort into the design and on-board facilities to ensure it made an impact yet is still 100% Celebrity in terms of food and service. They certainly succeeded. The most talked-about feature has to be the half-acre real grass lawn on the top deck, where passengers can play croquet and boules, or go putting, but just as notable are the many additional restaurants, the new AquaClass cabins and the fountains in the pool area. There are also some very stylish – and very unusual for a cruise ship - designs in the public rooms, most notably the Grand Epernay dining room, the Sky Observation Lounge and the solarium.
Celebrity generally attracts middle-class moneyed Americans aged 50-plus who appreciate good food and service, but this ship is likely to appeal also to the 40-plus market. As the brand has grown, it has also started to attract more nationalities, and especially British cruisers who want an elegant, more premium product. Most passengers will be couples and groups of friends, but it is also good for families who fit the more upmarket profile as there are facilities for children and teenagers. The Fun Club is for children aged three to 12, the X Club, with a dance area and coffee lounge, is for teens. Both are on deck 15 with direct access to the basketball court just outside, which is a smart arrangement.
There are two formal nights per seven-night cruise, when tuxedos and cocktail dresses are appropriate.Gratuities are automatically charged to each passenger’s account on a daily basis. There are three rates, for those in standard cabins, those in Concierge or AquaClass cabins and those in suites.Gratuities can be prepaid at the time of booking the cruise, in which case they are non-refundable. If paid on board, the charge can be changed or removed. The Fun Factory and X Club often close outside school holidays when there is no demand. Families should check when making a booking.
NB: The minimum age for drinking alcohol is 21 on Celebrity ships sailing from US ports.
