Silversea's Exotic LocationsSilver Spirit is Silversea’s first new ship for eight years. The vessel is classic Silversea in look, feel and layout, although with a few art deco touches, but it’s about one-third larger than Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper, which were previously its biggest ships.
The extra space has allowed the designers to add more places to eat – Stars Supper Club is new, as is Seishin, the Japanese word for Spirit, which serves Asian cuisine.
Also, suites are bigger and the ship has a huge proportion of balcony rooms, The spa is also larger than on Silversea’s other ships, with nine treatment rooms and a new hammam, where you can be steamed and scrubbed with chocolate, vanilla, lavender or tangerine for a substantial charge. The spa employs two doctors, one to administer Botox, the other acupuncture.
Silver Spirit is ideal for affluent couples aged 45-plus who appreciate good food and wine and want a lavish ultra-luxury experience being waited on hand and foot by the attentive crew. Silversea has offices around the world so fellow passengers will be from all corners of the globe, including North America, Asia and Europe. Generally they will be people who are comfortable with their money, and are elegant but not at all ostentatious. Children are not banned from Silver Spirit, but this is not a good choice for kids under 16s as there’s nothing for them to do and unlikely to be others of the same age for them to mix with.
Silver Spirit has eight public decks, numbered four to 12. Each deck has suites at the forward end and public spaces at the aft. Decks 11 and 12, at the forward end of the ship, do not run the full length of the vessel. Deck 12 is for sunbathing, deck 11 houses 14 Silver Suites and the observation lounge. There are 12 more Silver Suites on Deck 10, and also the jogging track. The pool, pool grill and pool bar are mid-ships on deck nine; the Panorama lounge is at the aft end of this deck. Deck eight houses the casino, shops and Connoisseur’s Corner, the smoking room, while La Terrazza restaurant, Stars Supper Club, the library and internet centre are on deck seven. The spa is on deck six and has a thermal suite, with four heated mosaic beds, a sauna and steam room that opens to an outdoor relaxation area with views over the ship’s wake. There’s a moderate charge to use the thermal suite. A small gym is also on this deck. Deck five houses the show lounge, The Bar and guest services. The dining room is on deck four.
Silver Spirit offers all-suite accommodation in outside staterooms. There are a total 270 suites, of which all but 14 have a teak balcony. There are 14 oceanview Vista suites, 492 Veranda suites, 26 Silver suites, six Grand suites and two Owners’ suites. The Grand and Owners’ suites have a connecting door to a neighbouring suite to accommodate passengers who want extra room. Four suites have wide entrances for wheelchair access. Suites have a separate sitting area, with a dividing curtain in staterooms that do not have separate rooms, a walk-in wardrobe and a marble bathroom with two basins, a separate shower and bathtub. They all have butler service and complimentary 24-hour room service.??All suites are equipped with a flat-screen TV built into the mirror, a DVD, an iPod docking station, a safe and hairdryer. Suites in the Silver category and above additionally have a CD player. Grand and Owners’ suites have separate dining areas. Passengers receive a free daily newspaper and complimentary laundry service. Owners’ suites have a full-size Jacuzzi and an additional toilet. Vista suites measure 312 square feet, while Veranda suites are 376 square feet with a 65 square foot balcony. Silver suites measure 742 square feet and have a 118 square foot balcony. Grand suites measure 990 square feet and have a 125 square foot balcony. Owner’s suites are 1,292 square feet and 190 square feet respectively.
The show lounge is the main entertainment venue, with mainly song-and-dance performances most nights. There’s live music in the Panorama Lounge and The Bar before and after dinner. At 11pm, the Panorama Lounge becomes a disco. The Stars Supper Club has live jazzy-style music from 9pm.
The main dining room is called The Restaurant and is open for waiter-service breakfast, lunch and dinner. Passengers can eat when they wish and sit with whom they choose at all times. Dinner is served from 7.30pm until 9.45pm. La Terrazza is open for self-service breakfast and lunch, and becomes a waiter-service Italian restaurant in the evening. Reservations are required but there is no cover charge. Le Champagne has two dining options. Passengers can pay a hefty per person supplement for a dégustation menu, with a different wine, specially selected to match the food, is served with each dish. Alternatively, there is a medium-priced per person food-only option. In this case, wine to accompany the meal must be bought from the wine list. Le Champagne has 11 themed menus but only one is available each day. The selection includes menus based on food from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy and North America, as well as foie gras and champagne, game and truffle-based menus. Seishin is a new restaurant and serves an 11-course Asian-style seafood menu including sushi and sashimi. Reservations are needed and there is high supplement. For an additional supplement seven different sakes will be served with the food. A wine-paring option is available for a hefty per person supplement. The Stars Supper Club is also new and is more about food entertainment than dining. The menu features five different sets of dishes, each consisting of three bite-size portions. The idea is to nibble on a couple of dishes after dinner – it doesn’t open until 9pm – while enjoying the entertainment. There is no charge. The pool grill is open for a healthy spa breakfast. Burgers, hot dogs and other grills are served at lunch time. In the evening, it becomes an al-fresco casual dining option serving steaks, chops and seafood that are seared in the galley and “finished” by passengers using heated rocks at the table. Afternoon tea is served in the Panorama Lounge and The Bar between 4pm and 4.45pm.
Booking the food-only option in Le Champagne is great value even given you have to order your wines from the wine list.
Drinks – other than premium brands - and gratuities are included in the cruise price.
There are two formal nights per seven-night cruise, more for longer voyages. An evening gown or cocktail dress is recommended for ladies and dinner jackets or tuxedos for men.
Casually elegant dress is acceptable in La Terrazza on formal nights.
Late disembarkation, until 5pm, is available for a substantial per person charge. If passengers want the use of a suite, the cost is higher. Both options must be booked at least 24 hours before disembarkation.
The two Vista suites on deck eight are generally used only if passengers in the Owner’s suites require an extra room.
